Fido Adjusts plans to Compete with Koodo and Others
This past weekend, Fido, a subsidiary of rogers, introduced new discounts on several of it's mobile plans to align with offers from Koodo and other competitors. While some changes are beneficial for customers, not all adjustments are positive. Let’s break down the details.
New Pricing Structure
- $24/month for 10GB plus an additional 10GB bonus (previously $35)
- $28/month for 60GB plus an extra 20GB bonus (previously $40)
- $35/month for 60GB with a bonus of 20GB usable in Canada,the U.S., and Mexico (previously $49)
- $75/month for 100GB (up from $55)
All these plans come equipped with 5G data offering speeds up to 1Gbps, unlimited international calls to over two dozen countries, and either 500 or even up to 1,000 international texts depending on the plan. However, it seems that Fido has discontinued its free hotspot feature. If you want hotspot access now, you'll need to pay extra for that add-on.
Discounts Galore but Some Plans Take a Hit
the new pricing includes various discounts such as a monthly autopay reduction of $5 along with other promotional cuts aimed at matching Koodo's offerings. Just last Friday, telus-owned Koodo announced a sale offering a whopping 25% off all its available 5G plans. This move came in response to Freedom Mobile reintroducing their attractive plan featuring an extraordinary data allowance of 250GB and Public Mobile enhancing their own offerings significantly.
However,not every change is favorable at Fido. The carrier's previously popular plan providing access to 100GB has seen its price rise sharply; it now costs $75 instead of the earlier rate of $55. In comparison, Koodo currently offers this same type of plan at just about $38.75 per month while Public Mobile features an appealing option priced at only $40 for their own version boasting150 GB.
A Confusing Offer?
An oddity on Fido’s website is the listing of an unusual plan priced at $80 per month for just 10 GB—which raises eyebrows considering that there’s also a much cheaper option available at only $24 per month offering more data! It seems hard to believe anyone would choose this higher-priced choice when better options exist within Fido itself.
The Competitive Landscape: Is Fido Worth It?
while it's commendable that Fido is trying to match Koodo's pricing strategies—especially given their faster data speeds—it appears they may be missing out by not including hotspot access in these new deals. This omission could be notable since many users rely heavily on mobile hotspots today.
Add into this mix what Freedom Mobile and Public are currently doing; both have enticing deals worth considering if you're shopping around right now!

No end date has been specified by Fido regarding these promotions; however other carriers’ offers are set to expire soon (March16).
