XChat: The New Messaging Platform from X
X, previously known as Twitter, is planning to replace its direct messaging feature with a new service called XChat.
Changes Ahead for Direct Messages
Zack Warunek, a software engineer at X, recently indicated that the current DMs section will be removed soon. This announcement came after a user reported issues accessing their message history. When asked if he could resolve the problem, Warunek replied that the page would be deleted shortly. He confirmed that users would not have access to message requests anymore and stated that all direct messages would soon disappear.
What to Expect from XChat
This exchange hints at an upcoming launch of XChat. This new platform aims to enhance the existing DMs feature by introducing functionalities similar to Facebook Messenger but with added privacy options. An analyst from MacRumors noted several features expected in XChat: users will be able to send PDFs and other file types; they can delete messages for everyone in a conversation; and there will be a Vanishing mode similar to what Instagram offers on its messaging platform. Additionally, all communications through XChat will have full encryption for better security.
Enhanced Security Features
Nima Owji, an independent web developer, shared an early look at how XChat might work. His screenshot revealed options for deleting messages either just for oneself or for everyone involved in the chat. It also showed that users could set up a PIN code each time they access XChat for added protection.
Elon Musk's Vision
Elon Musk hinted at the development of this new messaging service last year when he mentioned plans to stop using his phone number and rely solely on X for texting and calling others. Earlier this year, reports suggested that Musk aimed to compete with WhatsApp by enhancing the existing DM capabilities of the platform.

Another employee clarified that while DMs are being revamped into this new format called XChat, they are not being wholly eliminated from the platform. The exact launch date of XChat remains unclear; however, leaks indicate it may become available very soon.
as part of its evolution into a more comprehensive communication tool, X is set to introduce an upgraded messaging experience through its forthcoming platform—XChat—promising enhanced privacy features and improved functionality over traditional direct messages.
