Why I’ve Changed My Mind About the Core 2 Duo Smartwatch and Pebble’s Comeback

What Changed My Mind About the Core 2 Duo Smartwatch
I recently reconsidered my earlier strong opinions about the new Pebble smartwatch, the Core Devices Core 2 Duo. Initially, I was quite critical and thought pre-ordering it was a silly idea. Though, I've decided to place a pre-order for $150, despite knowing I’ll face hefty import fees and will have to wait until July for delivery. So what made me change my mind?
The First Impressions Matter
My view of the Core 2 Duo hasn’t shifted much; it still lags behind many other smartwatches in terms of features and design. Most alternatives on the market are more advanced and visually appealing. This is why I don’t feel guilty about my previous criticisms; they still hold true.
However, seeing the smartwatch in action changed everything for me. Eric Migicovsky, founder of Pebble and Core devices, showcased an early version during his Tick Talk podcast on YouTube. although it wasn’t an extensive presentation, it confirmed that this smartwatch is real and evolving.
A Real Product Comes to Life
Watching Migicovsky wear a prototype of the Core 2 Duo brought excitement to this project. Before this moment, all I had were some images and specs that didn’t convince me to invest money into something uncertain.
Migicovsky’s presentation style also played a meaningful role in changing my perspective. He confidently demonstrated a work-in-progress product while being obvious about its limitations. The casual setting—a simple desk in his home studio—made him relatable rather than overly promotional or salesy.
This straightforward approach made me appreciate how genuine he was about showcasing his creation without any marketing fluff surrounding it. It felt refreshing compared to how other companies frequently enough hype their products before they’re ready for sale.
The Need for Support
Support became crucial in my decision to pre-order the Core 2 Duo smartwatch. While I acknowledge that its design may evoke nostalgia—especially as I owned an original Pebble—I know it's not going to revolutionize my life or daily routine.
We don’t necessarily need another smartwatch when there are already superior options available today; however, it's vital not to overlook smaller brands like pebble that strive to create unique products like this one.
For every major tech company releasing flashy gadgets, there should be space for smaller brands with passion projects to—like Migicovsky’s team at pebble—to thrive as well.
Not every small brand deserves our attention; sometimes flashy marketing doesn’t guarantee quality (looking at you Humane). But when you find something promising enough after careful consideration—and see tangible proof—it feels right investing your money into such projects. Will It Fit Into My Routine?
Now that I've committed myself by pre-ordering the Core 2 Duo as support rather than necessity: does this mean I'm not planning on wearing it? Not exactly! While supporting innovation is essential here—the main reason isn’t just as of personal use either!
Currently owning devices like an Apple Watch Series 10 along with Oura Ring 4 means those gadgets cover most needs from wearable technology today anyway!
When mine arrives eventually though? Who knows—I might enjoy its retro software vibe or even find joy using something designed with kids’ aesthetics! Irrespective of whether I'll wear it regularly or not—I’m glad I've reassessed where I stand regarding purchasing decisions around wearable tech lately—even if others champion different reasons altogether!
