Young Developers Win Big with Innovative Game
A group of talented young developers from the University of the Philippines Mindanao has won the top prize in the department of Trade and Industry’s Young creatives Challenge Season 2. Their rhythm-puzzle game, RiBeat!, earned them ₱1 million.
The Game: RiBeat!
Created by Sweet Banana Studios, RiBeat! is an exciting rhythm-puzzle game. Players take on the role of Muira, a musical frog who navigates through beat-matching challenges and obstacles.The game includes thrilling boss fights against animal musicians, each showcasing different instruments and rhythms.
Meet the Team Behind RiBeat!
The core team consists of graduates from UP Mindanao's BS Computer Science programme. Key members include:
- Franz Kenji Vilela: Project lead and main programmer
- Kaye Janua Maceda: Quality assurance and business lead
- Francis Gabriel Jacinto: Programmer and sound designer
- Rhymno orioque: programmer and 3D artist
They are joined by additional talents:
- mark Bolilan: 3D artist and user interface designer
- Zian Callao: Sound designer
From Competition to Full Project
Originally created for the 2022 Game Jam Plus competition, where it was a finalist, RiBeat! has grown into a complete project. The game's story is inspired by the Legend of Muiraquitã. Players follow Muira as he journeys through the Amazon River to uncover the mystery behind lost fireflies while aiming to reach Mirror of Moon Lake.
