Many players still recommend it today, eagerly anticipating its sequel.
The Development Journey
After the success of Moonlighter, developer Digital Sun Games took time to work on other projects like The Mageseeker: A league of Legends Story and Cataclismo. However, they announced last December that they are developing a sequel titled Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault. I had the chance to see this new game in action during an ID@Xbox roundtable event.
What’s New in Moonlighter 2?
Moonlighter 2 aims to enhance the original game's formula while keeping its core gameplay intact. Players will still explore dungeons for loot, sell items at their shop, upgrade gear with earnings, and repeat this cycle. In this sequel,protagonist Will finds himself transported to Tresna—a town in another dimension—where players must help him return home while revitalizing Tresna into a lively community.
embracing Roguelike Elements
Israel Mallen from Digital Sun explained that while the first game leaned more towards action-RPG elements with some roguelike features, Moonlighter 2 will focus heavily on roguelike mechanics. “This time around,” Mallen saeid, “we want every weapon and perk found in dungeons or shops to feel unique.”
Enhanced Combat Experience
Combat has seen notable improvements compared to the original game.While the first installment resembled classic titles like the Legend of Zelda, the new version draws inspiration from games such as Hades or Furi. Players can create character builds based on different roles like tanks or ranged fighters as they navigate through rooms filled with enemies.
Boss battles add another layer of challenge; one boss called the Herald fires projectiles while hiding behind barriers. Players must dodge attacks skillfully before disabling shields for counterattacks. Deciding when to return home is crucial since overextending can lead players to lose valuable relics collected during their runs.
Shop Management strategies
In addition to combat challenges, managing your shop effectively is key for success in Moonlighter 2.Players need smart backpack management during dungeon runs so they can maximize what they bring back home. When setting up their shops later on, factors such as item placement and synergy between products become essential for attracting customers.
Growth of Digital Sun Games
Digital Sun has evolved considerably since creating the first game; now they're more experienced than ever before. Mallen noted that back then they were a small team limited by resources but now have more time and expertise at their disposal—allowing them greater ambition for replayability within this sequel.
