Ultimate Ranking of Every Pokémon Starter: Who Comes Out on Top?

after nine main series Pokémon games, the roster has expanded to over 1,000 unique creatures. Each game typically follows a similar format: players build their teams to become champions of their region. The journey begins with selecting a starter Pokémon. While Legendary Pokémon often steal the spotlight,it's the starters that truly shape each generation. These initial partners accompany players throughout their adventures and set the overall tone for gameplay. Drawing from extensive experience with each title, we present our ranking of starter Pokémon from least to most extraordinary.
note: This ranking focuses solely on starters from mainline Pokémon games and excludes any spin-off titles.
10.Tepig
Tepig ranks lowest on our list due to its cute yet somewhat bland design. As a Fire-type in Generation 5, it stands out as the only viable option for many key battles in the game thanks to its final evolution gaining Fighting-type attributes, which is useful against Elite Four members. However, Tepig's design remains goofy across its evolutions; while Emboar is arguably its coolest form, it fails to leave a lasting impression.
9. Sobble
In our view, Generation 8 features some of the weakest starter options available. the three choices are visually similar and offer comparable strengths in battle; this balance can make gameplay feel less distinct based on your selection. Sobble does perform well against later gyms and boasts an captivating final evolution that stands out among its peers. Its Pokédex entry humorously notes that Sobble's tears have “the chemical punch of 100 onions,” adding some charm.
8.Fuecoco
Initially skeptical about Fuecoco when starting Scarlet and Violet, we were surprised by how much we enjoyed this Fire-type starter despite its resemblance to Totodile at first glance. Its evolutions changed our perspective entirely—especially skeledirge—which introduces both fire- and Ghost-types into play for unique advantages in battles.
7. Totodile
Following up after Generation One’s iconic starters was no easy task for Gen Two’s choices; though, Totodile managed to capture attention without being too derivative of squirtle's design as a blue crocodile-like creature that balances cuteness with danger effectively enough for fans' approval despite minimal changes through evolution stages.
6. Chimchar
Chimchar may initially remind players of Charmander but evolves into something uniquely captivating by reaching Infernape—a form inspired by Son Wukong—that feels like an appropriate culmination point within this evolutionary line! Additionally noteworthy is Chimchar’s advantage over other Gen Four starters due largely as fewer new Fire-types were introduced compared with Water or Grass types during this generation!
5.Cyndaquil
Cyndaquil quickly became popular among fans during Gen Two thanks largely due not just aesthetics but also power levels! With blazing flames along its back making it visually appealing alongside strong performance against gym leaders & Elite Four members alike—though creative evolutions could’ve elevated Cyndaquil higher then Typhlosion which feels more like an enlarged version rather than distinct transformation altogether!
4.Mudkip
Mudkip earns high marks partly as memes surrounding it have made quite an impact—but there’s more than just humor behind why peopel love this Water-type! After evolving fully into Swampert (which looks cooler), Mudkip becomes even stronger as transitioning into dual water/ground typing grants significant advantages throughout various encounters within gameplay itself!
###3.Charmander
charmander remains one of franchise icons alongside Pikachu—its popularity stemming mainly from Charizard who embodies everything desired from any starter: starting off small yet cute before transforming into formidable force later down line! Despite Charmeleon being slightly awkward during transition phases between forms—it ultimately leads towards dragon-like appearance everyone adores today!
###2.Froakie
Froakie might seem unremarkable at first glance but proves or else once evolved all way up Greninja—a transformation showcasing extreme glow-up rarely seen elsewhere across series history! Not only does Greninja boast striking design elements making him fan-favorite (even appearing Super Smash Bros.) but he also offers solid performance throughout challenging parts game too—even if not optimal choice overall!
###1.Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur deserves top spot here—not merely bias speaking either—as he excels beyond expectations compared counterparts found within same generation(s). Offering great power early on helps crush gym leaders while adding Poison typing upon evolving enhances versatility further still; plus Ivysaur/Venusaur feel like true successors rather than mere color swaps which adds depth appreciated greatly amongst trainers everywhere!
