Telus Launches Major Fibre Optic Project Across the St. Lawrence River
This summer, Telus received the green light to start an ambitious project involving fibre optic cable installation across a significant stretch of the St. Lawrence River, where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
The new cable will connect Sept-Îles on the southern bank with Sainte-Anne-des-Monts on the opposite side. This extensive infrastructure initiative is estimated to cost around $20 million, with financial support from both Telus and the Government of Canada contributing up to $7.5 million.
A Milestone for North Shore Connectivity
“This deployment marks years of meticulous planning and signifies a major technological advancement for North Shore communities,” stated Nazim Benhadid, Chief Technology Officer at Telus, in an official announcement.
The company’s press release highlighted that onc fully installed, this cable should be operational within weeks.The process involves a large cable-laying ship that will take approximately 10 to 15 days to complete its work. When finished,this undersea connection will span about 125 kilometers and have a diameter of just 3 centimeters. to ensure safety and durability, it will be buried one and a half meters beneath the ocean floor—well out of reach from other underwater activities.
Long-Term Benefits Expected
Cables like these are designed for longevity; they can typically last several decades without needing replacement or major repairs.However, while this project lays down essential groundwork for improved connectivity in the region, additional infrastructure progress on the northern side of the river is necessary before residents can access fibre optic services directly in their homes.
