Public Mobile’s Latest Plans Fail to Impress Customers

Public Mobile's new Plans: A Disappointing Shift
On July 8, Public Mobile, a subsidiary of Telus, introduced new mobile plans that have left many customers feeling let down.
A Closer look at the New Offerings
The latest plan options are as follows:
- $40 for 20GB of 5G data in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico
- $50 for 30GB of 5G data in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico
- $35 for 15GB of Canada-wide 4G data
- $25 for 4GB of Canada-wide 4G data
- $19 for just 1GB of Canada-wide 4G data (available until july 14)
Comparing old and New Plans: A Step Backward?
When we compare these new offerings to what public Mobile had just a few days earlier, it’s clear that these changes are quite disappointing. The $40/20GB and $50/30GB plans now provide considerably less data while costing more than previous options. For instance, there was once a $36 plan offering an impressive 60GB across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Now customers face paying an extra $4 but receiving only half as much data—just a mere 20GB.
The Situation with Canada-Wide Plans
The news isn’t any better when looking at their nationwide plans. the new $35/15GB option is pricier than older choices like the $32 plan that provided double the amount at just about the same price point. Simultaneously occurring, their existing $25/4GB plan remains unchanged; though, it’s worth noting that the low-cost option priced at $19 will soon disappear without any indication of being replaced by something better.
A Fall from Grace?
This shift is particularly disheartening because Public Mobile had been one of my top recommendations among wireless providers recently due to its competitive pricing and value—only rivaled by Freedom Mobile in terms of affordability within Canadian telecoms.
Where Does Public Stand Now?
Currently, Public's offerings find themselves stuck between Freedom's attractive deals and lackluster options from other brands like Koodo or Fido. For example, while Public’s new $40/20GB plan outshines Fido’s recent offer which provides only half as much—10 GB—it still falls short compared to Fido's more generous deal featuring a whopping $50 for up to 60 GB if you don’t require roaming services across North America.
