Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Proves 2D Games Still Reign Supreme!

Ninja Gaiden Returns: A New Chapter in Gaming
Koei Tecmo has revived the Ninja Gaiden franchise with exciting new releases. Last month, they launched Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the classic Xbox 360 game using Unreal Engine 5. Later this year, fans can look forward to Ninja Gaiden 4, marking the frist original title in over ten years. This busy schedule is remarkable for any series, especially one that has been quiet for a while. But that's not all; this year will also see the release of Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound,a fresh take on the series developed by Dotemu and The Game Kitchen.
A Classic Reimagined
Ninja Gaiden started as an arcade game and later became popular on the NES as a side-scrolling beat-em-up. the question remains: can this style still appeal to today's gamers who are more familiar with its iconic 3D versions? After experiencing an hour-long demo of Ragebound,it’s clear that dotemu is crafting a polished retro experience that goes beyond mere nostalgia. This game aims to honor its roots without needing major changes.
The Storyline Unfolds
Set during events from the NES version of Ninja Gaiden, Ragebound follows Kenji while Ryu seeks revenge in America. Although my demo didn’t reveal much about the plot yet, it appears straightforward—Kenji must collect crystals throughout his journey.
Jumping into Action
The gameplay kicks off with an introductory stage where I quickly grasped its mechanics—running right and slashing at ninjas and monsters around me. If you’ve played classic side-scrollers like Castlevania: Bloodlines on Sega Genesis, you’ll feel right at home here. My attacks are limited to straight ahead while I block projectiles with my sword and navigate light platforming challenges through wall jumps and ceiling hangs. However, what seems simple at first quickly reveals deeper layers once I enter a tutorial phase that introduces advanced movement techniques like hover jumps for bouncing off projectiles and dodge rolls for evading attacks.Combat Mechanics Evolve
As I progress through levels designed to enhance these mechanics further, I discover charged attacks that empower my strikes against enemies marked by blue auras—allowing me to defeat larger foes in one hit if timed correctly. If no glowing enemy is nearby when needed for power-ups, holding down attack consumes some health but grants similar strength—a clever risk-reward element added into combat strategy.
Dual Character Control
One unique feature is controlling two characters concurrently: Kenji and Kuromi. Kuromi expands my abilities; pressing B launches projectiles forward or Y sends them arcing upward—all requiring pink energy gained from defeating enemies. This dual-character system adds complexity beyond initial appearances as players must match colors when attacking enemies to gain buffs effectively.
navigating Challenges
Using Kuromi's powers allows me to tackle timed challenges where precise projectile use helps me teleport over spike pits or bounce across water gaps using Kenji’s hover slash ability during seaside levels—all while maintaining familiarity with past games’ styles without feeling outdated or disconnected from their essence.
Boss Battles Test Skills
No retro side-scroller would be complete without challenging boss fights demanding mastery over each gameplay system learned so far! One memorable encounter involved battling two sea serpents appearing on either side of rickety platforms—I had to dodge their fire streams while striking back strategically when opportunities arose based on telegraphed moves indicating potential weaknesses!
A Promising Future
It’s evident why Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound feels finely tuned; Dotemu strives not just for nostalgic experiences but genuine continuations honoring beloved franchises left behind sence earlier gaming eras! Partnering with The Game Kitchen ensures quality craftsmanship reminiscent of their accomplished Blasphemous titles showcasing modern iterations within rich pixel art adventures!
Ragebound embraces tradition wholeheartedly—staying true without resorting solely relying upon nostalgia gimmicks alone! If final gameplay matches what I've experienced thus far—it could easily overshadow even upcoming titles like Ninja Gaiden 4!
Release Data
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound will launch later this year across multiple platforms including PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S/Nintendo Switch/PC!
