Netflix opens massive animation studio in Vancouver
Netflix has opened a new 110,000-square-foot animation studio in Vancouver.
As reported by The Vancouver Sun, the five-floor office is located on East 5th Avenue in Mount Pleasant and will staff 450 people. Overall, it’s expected to contribute around $100 million to the province’s annual GDP. While Netflix Animation Studio (NAS) has been operating in B.C. for over a decade (previously under the name of Animal Logic), this new office significantly expands its footprint in the province.
One of the projects that NAS Vancouver is working on is Steps, a twist on the iconic Cinderella fairytale focused on the stepsisters. Alongside today’s opening of the Vancouver office, Netflix just confirmed that Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried (Mank) will voice Cinderella.
The Vancouver studio is one of three NAS offices in the world, the other two being in California and Sydney. Vancouver is often referred to as “Hollywood North” for being home to so many big productions, from the first two Deadpool and Sonic the Hedgehog Movies to shows like Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, HBO’s The Last of Us and Disney’s Shōgun.
There’s also a major animation presence in the province beyond just Netflix, with the likes of Disney and Sony having studios there. (Fun fact: last year’s smash hit KPop Demon Hunters, which was co-directed by Toronto’s Maggie Kang, was largely animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks studios in Vancouver and Montreal before being licensed to Netflix.)
