Widespread connectivity Problems
A large-scale internet outage has impacted numerous provinces across Canada, affecting major providers such as Bell and Telus. The disruptions started shortly after 9 a.m. ET on May 21. Many users took to social media platforms and outage tracking websites like downdetector.ca to share their experiences.
This issue has not only affected the primary companies but also their subsidiary brands and smaller providers like TekSavvy that depend on the infrastructure of larger ISPs such as Rogers and Bell.
Peak Outage Reports
By around 9:30 a.m., more than 130,000 individuals reported issues with Bell services on Downdetector.Virgin experienced about 7,000 reports while Rogers had roughly 5,000 complaints regarding service interruptions.
Currently, it truly seems wireline internet services are facing the brunt of this disruption. Some mobile services remain functional for certain users; however, there have been reports of inconsistent mobile connectivity as well.
Provider Responses to the Outage
We reached out to representatives from Bell, Rogers, and Telus for insights into the ongoing situation.
Rogers spokesperson Zac Carreiro mentioned that they were not officially declaring an outage but were monitoring developments closely. Customer feedback has varied; some report stable connections while others experience outages or slower speeds than normal. According to Downdetector data, ongoing issues seem concentrated in British Columbia (B.C.), Ontario (ON), and Quebec (QC).
Bell acknowledged the situation through a Twitter post indicating outages primarily affecting Ontario and Quebec regions. In an email response confirming these problems in those areas they stated that “Some customers in Ontario and Quebec may be experiencing an internet outage.” they assured customers that their network team was actively investigating further.Telus provided updates via its service status page showing problems mainly occurring in Alberta (AB), B.C.,and Eastern Canada. Though, Telus clarified that moast of these outages relate more to wireless services rather than wired connections. The company is working diligently towards restoring full service as quickly as possible.
