Major Internet Outage Hits Bell and Telus Across Multiple Provinces!

Internet Outage Hits Major Canadian Providers
service restoration Updates
As of May 21, 2025, at 10:22 a.m. ET, some users are starting to regain internet access. My Bell service in Hamilton is back online, and reports from others indicate that services are also returning for them.
Widespread Internet Issues
A significant internet outage has affected several provinces in Canada, impacting major providers like Bell and Telus. The problems began shortly after 9 a.m. ET on May 21, with many users taking to social media and outage reporting sites like Downdetector.ca to share their experiences.
The outage has not only hit the main companies but also their flanker brands and wholesale providers such as TekSavvy. These smaller companies rely on the infrastructure of larger ISPs like Rogers and Bell.
Peak outage Reports
At around 9:30 a.m., over 130,000 people reported issues with Bell on downdetector. Virgin had about 7,000 reports while Rogers saw around 5,000 complaints regarding service disruptions.
Currently, it seems that the wireline internet services are most affected by this outage. Some mobile services remain operational for certain users; however, there have been reports of inconsistent mobile connections as well.
Provider Responses
MobileSyrup reached out to representatives from Bell, Rogers, and Telus for comments regarding the situation.
Rogers spokesperson Zac Carreiro stated that they were not experiencing an official outage but were keeping an eye on developments. Customer feedback has been mixed; some report stable internet while others face outages or slower speeds than usual. Downdetector indicates ongoing issues primarily affecting British Columbia (B.C.), Ontario (ON), and Quebec (QC).Bell acknowledged the problem through a post on Twitter stating they were facing outages in Ontario and Quebec regions. In an email response to MobileSyrup, they confirmed that “Some customers in Ontario and Quebec may be experiencing an internet outage.” They assured customers that their network team was investigating the issue further.
Telus provided data via its service status page indicating problems mainly in alberta (AB), B.C., and Eastern Canada. Though, Telus clarified that these outages mostly relate to wireless services rather than wired internet connections. The company is actively working towards restoring full service as quickly as possible.
Conclusion: ongoing monitoring Required
This situation remains fluid as more updates come in throughout the day regarding restoration efforts across all affected areas.
