Koodo increasing some customers’ prepaid plans by $3

Reports are coming in that Koodo’s prepaid customers will have their plans increased by $3 starting on September 15.
Koodo owner Telus confirmed the price hike to MobileSyrup in a statement, but didn’t explain why it was increasing prices. The full statement is below:
“We proactively contacted a small number of Koodo prepaid customers on select legacy rate plans to inform them that they would see a $3 increase on their next billing cycle, beginning September 15. Affected customers can take advantage of any of our in-market rate plans that best suit their needs and budget, which includes unlimited Canada-wide calling and data at 4G speeds, offering even more value.”
One user whose usual plan cost was $15 per month reports that their plan is going up to $18. It should be noted that the equivalent plan that Koodo sells right now is $19 and includes basically unlimited calling and texting. If you sign up for automatic payments, you will get 500MB of data, but that’s probably just enough to use a little bit of WhatsApp or iMessage.
Users on Reddit also note that previously, the top-up add-ons that allowed customers to get extra data or minutes would remain on their accounts as long as they paid their bills. Now, they’re going to start expiring after 30 days. This could substantially raise the price that the average prepaid customer needs to pay over a year.
If you need a dirt-cheap prepaid plan, SpeakOut Wireless offers traditional prepaid plans that cost $0.35 per minute. If you don’t use your phone often, a $25 top-up could last you a long time since these plans last a year. That said, you will need a modern phone that supports VoLTE since Rogers is shutting down its 3G network this year.
