The latest update for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 brings a new Hardcore Mode that substantially increases the game's difficulty. This mode is designed to provide players with a more intense experience, akin to surviving during the Bubonic Plague while facing numerous challenges. After much anticipation, players can finally explore what this mode entails.
Immersive Gameplay Changes
Hardcore Mode aims to enhance immersion by removing several conveniences. Players will no longer have access to fast travel or their exact location on the map. Directions for quests are also unavailable, meaning players must rely on in-game information and their surroundings. The patch notes emphasize that “Hardcore Mode is here — and it’s not for the faint of heart.”
Seeking Help from NPCs
In this new mode, you can ask non-playable characters (NPCs) for help regarding your location or directions. Though, your success depends on your reputation and how friendly those you encounter are toward you. Not everyone will be willing to assist just because you ask.
Permanent Negative Perks
When starting Hardcore Mode, players must select at least three permanent negative perks that affect gameplay significantly. Once chosen, these perks cannot be changed back later in the game. For instance, picking Heavy-Footed makes movement noisier and wears out shoes faster; choosing Numbskull slows down experience gain.
Evolution of Previous Modes
Fans of the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance may recall its own version of Hardcore mode. The developers aimed to improve upon that concept with this new addition while keeping some elements familiar. Karel Kolmann, a senior game designer at Warhorse Studios, stated they were pleased with how Hardcore Mode worked in the first game but wanted something different this time around.

If you've already mastered Bohemia in previous playthroughs, Hardcore Mode offers a fresh challenge that revitalizes gameplay dynamics. It allows players to immerse themselves deeply into medieval life without facing real-life dangers like disease or unpleasant odors.
