IPadOS 19: Why a macOS-Style Refresh is Long Overdue for Apple

Apple's Tablets: A New Era on the Horizon
Apple is known for creating some of the most powerful and refined tablets available. The iPad Pro series stands out as a top choice for creative professionals. With the introduction of M-series chips in these devices, their performance has reached impressive new heights.
However, one area that still needs improvement is iPadOS. While features like Stage Manager have been introduced, the operating system often feels like an extended version of iOS rather than a unique tablet experience. this may change with upcoming updates.
Upcoming Changes to iPadOS
Reports suggest that Apple plans to considerably update iPadOS 19 this year, aiming to make it more similar to macOS. This information comes from credible sources and indicates that Apple intends to enhance productivity features within its tablet software.According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this year's update will prioritize multitasking and app window management. The goal is for the device to function more like a Mac computer.
details about specific changes remain limited; however, window management appears set for improvement. Currently, resizing app windows on an iPad can be quite restrictive. Even though modern iPads boast screen sizes comparable to those of MacBook Airs, users cannot freely adjust app windows as they would expect on a laptop.
Stage Manager has attempted to improve user interface options by allowing better use of larger screens and incorporating elements from macOS’s background app management system. However, many users find it lacking in versatility compared to what macOS offers despite having powerful hardware at their disposal.learning from Competitors
Apple could benefit by looking at how Samsung implements its DeX feature or how OnePlus has developed its Open Canvas system on recent tablets. My own experience with the M4-powered iPad Pro shows that while it has great power under the hood,it lacks desktop-like functionality needed for optimal use.
The Importance of these Updates
The Bloomberg report emphasizes that enhancing productivity will be key in the upcoming release of iPadOS 19 during WWDC in June this year. Even though details are scarce regarding Apple's exact plans, adding more flexibility akin to desktop environments would greatly improve usability when running various applications.
In my review last year about the iPad Pro's capabilities—sadly still relevant today—I noted:
“Unless you are a creative whose entire workflow revolves around tools like Procreate or Adobe Creative Suite or Logic Pro, you rely heavily on web browsers for tasks.” I pointed out that Safari falls short while Chrome’s mobile version lacks essential features found in its desktop counterpart; even basic browser extensions are unavailable on such an expensive device.Looking Ahead: A Design Overhaul?
Rumors indicate Apple may also consider redesigning its operating systems—including improvements for both macOS and iPadOS—in their next annual upgrade cycle. I hope this means we’ll see more professional-grade applications along with improved connectivity between tablet experiences and Mac computers.
As a notable example, Oppo’s Find N5 foldable showcased what seamless integration could look like between devices; there’s no reason why Apple can’t achieve something similar given their resources and expertise in technology progress.
