I Tried a Smart Ring with a Display and It Surprised Me

For years, I’ve been telling myself that I don’t need another screen in my life. Initially, I thought it was just a personal quirk. Though, a quick scroll through Reddit and X reveals many others exploring the “dumb phone” trend or showcasing their minimalist tech setups.
My journey toward reducing screen time has had mixed results. Nowadays, there’s always a screen within reach—whether it’s my work monitor that measures 24 inches or larger and demands my attention for about eight hours daily or the smartwatch on my wrist that buzzes with notifications. It truly seems like screens are everywhere.
I decided to deactivate my social media accounts—not out of disdain for them but to escape the endless cycle of doom scrolling that can easily consume an hour or more of my day. So when I stumbled upon an advertisement for a new smart ring featuring a tiny display, curiosity piqued alongside some apprehension. Despite initial doubts, I went ahead and ordered one—and surprisingly enough, it hasn’t been all bad.
Exploring the Pebble Halo
The device in question is called the Pebble Halo, priced at around $100 and currently available for pre-order in India. A glance at AliExpress shows similar rings being sold in China for as low as $40.
This stark price difference raises questions about whether brands like Samsung and Oura are overcharging customers by selling smart rings at nearly four times this amount—some even add subscription fees on top!
Pebble is not new to this space; they have partnerships with major companies like Amazon, meta, and Intel. Their product lineup includes earbuds, smart home gadgets, speakers, and numerous smartwatches—and yes—they aren’t shy about borrowing ideas from competitors like Apple Watch.
So does this ring fall flat? Not entirely! It boasts stainless steel construction along with claims of water resistance (though I'm hesitant to test those claims). The features include heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen saturation tracking (SpO2), sleep analysis capabilities along with stress level assessments—all while keeping tabs on fitness activities such as step counting.
When compared to an Apple Watch's biosensing metrics for heart rate tracking and SpO2 measurement accuracy falls within 1-2%. For step counting accuracy during two days of testing showed variations between 5-8%—not too shabby!
I wouldn’t recommend relying solely on this ring for detailed workout tracking as past experiences with budget wearables have left me underwhelmed regarding precision. The stress detection feature frequently enough indicated distress even when I was enjoying light-hearted comics or listening to relaxing music while driving!
The Tiny Display: A Mixed Bag
Upon unboxing the Pebble smart ring initially filled me with skepticism regarding its small display's usefulness.Using its companion app allows you to customize what appears on its LED screen—but options are limited.
You can view basic details such as time elapsed as last activity steps taken heart rate readings along with stress levels displayed prominently; though other metrics including heart rate variability blood oxygen levels sleep data must be accessed via mobile app dashboard rather which somewhat undermines having any display at all! Yet looking back there’s also convenience here too!
This isn’t touch-sensitive technology where you swipe away endlessly; instead there's just one small area marked by rectangle icon allowing users slide tap thumb switch between different data points shown onscreen quickly without hassle navigating through irrelevant readings frist! Personally speaking limiting visible options down only show step count current heartbeat time made sense given what matters most right now anyway!
Comfort Over Clutter
The comfort factor cannot be overstated either: wearing something lightweight feels far better than bulky smartwatch especially during sleep tracking sessions! My biggest concern revolved around adding yet another screen into daily routine but thankfully no always-on-display system exists here meaning lights up only when activated intentionally avoiding accidental triggers altogether—a relief indeed!
When worn correctly index finger placement suggested means touch-sensitive area rests palm side open preventing unwanted activations unless deliberately tapped edge thumb tip directly activating desired info displayed momentarily before fading back darkness again afterwards conserving battery life effectively too—a wise choice overall considering how quickly power drains or else if kept constantly lit up continuously throughout day long usage periods would lead rapid depletion rates ultimately rendering device useless sooner rather than later…
A New Approach To Smart Rings
This gadget isn’t perfect though: checking heart rates requires patience waiting several seconds until readings finally appear onscreen meanwhile stress measurement systems haven’t proven particularly useful thus far either based previous experiences testing various wearables previously encountered before now…
Looking back retrospectively if given choice prefer opting towards using smarter alternatives over customary watches provided weren’t heavily reliant upon workout analytics GPS navigation music playback real-time exercise metrics etc., simply put having access vital signs less intrusively ergonomically convenient way keeping track health status without overwhelming distractions present elsewhere surrounding habitat makes sense overall…
A unique aspect worth mentioning involves gesture-based controls enabling users scroll pages e-books switch videos effortlessly utilizing finger movements alone wish Android offered worldwide tool binding actions apps together seamlessly enhancing functionality further still remains untapped potential awaiting exploration future developments ahead perhaps someday soon?!
Pebbles companion application also includes built-in gaming experiences such Flappy Bird playable via finger gestures although not quite intuitive fun nonetheless serves purpose entertaining distraction breaks boredom moments throughout day-to-day routines alike…
If executed thoughtfully enough incorporating flexibility sensor accuracy could see many individuals gravitating towards adopting format replacing conventional watches altogether eventually leading healthier lifestyles moving forward positively impacting well-being lives across board collectively improving quality living standards enjoyed everyone involved ultimately benefiting society whole wide range possibilities endless truly exciting times lie ahead indeed!!
