GoldenEye 007, Quake & More Inducted into World Video Game Hall of Fame!

New Inductees in the World Video Game Hall of Fame
The World Video Game Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2025, welcoming four iconic games: GoldenEye 007, quake, Defender, and Tamagotchi. This honor is presented by The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. The Hall recognizes games that have stood the test of time and made a lasting impact on gaming culture and technology.
GoldenEye 007: A Milestone in Gaming
GoldenEye 007 debuted on the Nintendo 64 in 1997 and changed how first-person shooters were played on consoles. Developed by Rare, it introduced stealth missions alongside split-screen multiplayer for up to four players. This game proved that complex gameplay could succeed outside personal computers. Its smart AI and varied mission goals added layers to gameplay that went beyond simple shooting mechanics.
Quake: Shaping Competitive Gaming
Quake was released by id Software in 1996 and is known for creating fully three-dimensional environments. It featured variable jump heights and a client-server setup that became essential for early esports competitions. With its fast-paced multiplayer modes and support for modifications, Quake built a strong community around it. Notable mods like Team Fortress emerged from this game, influencing competitive shooters today.
Defender: An Arcade Classic
Defender hit arcade cabinets in 1980 thanks to Williams Electronics. It offered challenging side-scrolling action with impressive graphics for its time. Players had to protect humans from alien kidnappers while managing speed and firepower across a horizontal landscape. Despite being tough to master, Defender became the top-earning arcade game of 1981 before making its way onto home consoles like the atari 2600.
Tamagotchi: The Digital Pet Revolution
Tamagotchi launched by Bandai in 1996 brought handheld gaming into many children's lives through virtual pets they needed to care for daily. These egg-shaped devices featured simple pixel art but required real-time attention from players as they nurtured their digital companions. In just one year, over twenty million units sold in Japan alone! the brand continues with new generations of Tamagotchis along with mobile apps that keep life-simulation games popular.
Selection Process for Induction
The selection process involved narrowing down ten finalists including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Age of Empires, Angry Birds, NBA 2K, and Stardew Valley among others. Each nominee was assessed based on factors such as longevity within gaming history; influence on design; cultural importance; innovation; among other criteria.
The induction ceremony will take place later this year at The Strong Museum where these honored titles will be showcased permanently within an exhibit dedicated to their legacy.
