Introducing Digits: A New Math Challenge from The New York Times

The New York Times has introduced a fresh game called digits, inspired by the popularity of Wordle. This new game emphasizes math skills, allowing players to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You can currently access its beta version online at no cost.

How to Play Digits

In Digits, your goal is to reach a specific target number. You begin with six numbers and must use them through different operations—adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing—to get as close as possible to the target. Not every number needs to be used in each round. This format tests your math skills as you try various combinations and calculations.

Understanding the scoring System

The scoring in Digits is simple:

  • Five stars for hitting the target number exactly.
  • three stars if you are within 10 of the target.
  • One star if you are within 25 of it.

currently available are five puzzles that feature increasingly larger numbers.I tried today’s puzzle and found it enjoyable; it's ideal for fans of number games like Threes or other popular titles from The New York Times such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

Your Progress Matters

In an article discussing the launch of Digits by The New York Times Games team, they noted that this free beta will help them find bugs and decide if further growth is needed. If player feedback during this testing phase isn’t strong enough, they may choose not to continue improving the game.
