Ookla's Latest Report: Who's Winning in Canadian Internet Speeds?
Ookla has just published its Canadian Speedtest report for the first half of 2025, revealing which internet providers are leading the pack in mobile adn fixed network performance this year.
Bell Takes the Crown
The report highlights Bell as the top mobile provider and also recognizes it for having the fastest fixed network across Canada. Bell’s mobile service was particularly noted for excelling in 5G gaming, while it dominated nearly all categories related to fixed networks, winning five out of six.
Rogers and Telus Make Their Mark
In addition to Bell, Ookla acknowledged Rogers and Telus. Rogers stood out with an extraordinary 85.5% of its users able to access its 5G network,making it the provider with the highest availability of this technology among Canadian companies. Simultaneously occurring, Telus received accolades for achieving a high level of customer satisfaction among mobile users, earning a score of 3.06 out of five.
A Tie in Consistency and Experience
The data from early 2025 did not yield a clear winner when it came to identifying which provider had the most consistent mobile networks or offered superior video experiences. In thes areas, there was no critically important difference between Bell, Rogers, or Telus. The same trend appeared within fixed networks; no standout emerged regarding consistency or video quality either.
Cities show Varied Performance Levels
Ookla also provided insights into how different cities across Canada performed regarding internet speeds.
Among major urban centers, Winnipeg claimed victory as having the best mobile network performance with an average download speed reaching up to 137.59 Mbps. on the other hand, Edmonton topped charts for fixed networks with an impressive median download speed of 285.3 Mbps—significantly higher than any other city surveyed.
A Closer Look at Provincial Data
Diving deeper into provincial statistics reveals that Saskatchewan leads with a median mobile download speed averaging at 122.85 Mbps; Manitoba follows closely behind while Newfoundland and Labrador takes third place in this category.
When examining fixed network speeds by province,Newfoundland and Labrador again shines through with a remarkable median speed hitting 298.9 Mbps—making it number one here too! New Brunswick comes next followed by British Columbia rounding out the top three spots.
