Why My Android 16 Update Made Me Envy iOS 26

I've just installed Android 16 on my Pixel 9 Pro Fold. As someone who eagerly anticipates software updates, this should be an exciting moment for me—so why do I feel underwhelmed?
Whether it’s a fresh update for one of my go-to apps or a complete overhaul of the operating system, I love diving into change logs to discover new features and enhancements.
With each major software release, there’s usually something to celebrate as I explore the latest offerings.
Yesterday marked the launch of Android 16 for Pixel users, and as a proud Pixel owner, I was thrilled. However, my initial reaction left me yearning for iOS 26 instead.
The allure of New Features
While Google has rolled out an incremental upgrade with Android 16,Apple has introduced its most critically important update as iOS 7 back in 2013—a full twelve years ago.
No wonder Apple had plenty to showcase during its WWDC 2025 keynote on June 9. The highlight was undoubtedly the stunning Liquid Glass redesign that promises to refresh every device in Apple's lineup this fall.
In contrast, Android 16 feels almost identical to its predecessor. After completing the update and exploring the interface, it was hard to tell that I was using a brand-new version of Android at all.
I understand that we can’t expect dramatic visual changes every year; though, it makes appreciating what Android 16 brings more challenging when everything looks so familiar.
The Easter egg feature is also quite similar—it's essentially the same space-themed mini-game from both Android 15 and Android 14. Gone are those days when each new version came with unique surprises!
Caught Up in apple's Design
I admit I've been dazzled by Apple's fresh design across its platforms. But beyond this eye-catching look, what does iOS 26 truly offer?
The Live Translation features are impressive; they provide real-time translated subtitles during FaceTime calls and live voice translation on phone calls—genuinely useful applications of Apple Intelligence in daily life.
Updates like Genmoji and Image Playground may entertain some users; though, it's certainly worth noting that Android's Gboard also introduces custom stickers with this latest update—not exactly groundbreaking territory for either platform!
The customization options offered by liquid Glass will be novel for those who haven't experienced Google's platform before—but let's not forget that customizable themes have been part of the Android experience for years now.
Additonally, Apple’s Visual Intelligence updates seem quite similar to Google Lens and gemini Live functionalities already available on many devices. Even some call screening features found in iOS have been present on various versions of Android long before now!
Android's Subtle Improvements
This isn’t to say that there aren’t any noteworthy additions coming with Android 16; certain features will substantially enhance user experiences across different scenarios.
I’m particularly enjoying grouped notifications from my smart cameras at home—they keep me informed without overwhelming me (better safe than sorry!). Plus I'm excited about tracking food deliveries in real-time thanks to live updates!
I’m fortunate enough not to need improvements made regarding hearing devices integration but recognize how impactful these changes will be for users who rely on them daily.
No doubt iOS 26 will breathe new life into many iPhone users' experiences—but let’s face it: Apple has played catch-up regarding several key areas where Google has led innovation.
Avoid getting swept away by shiny designs like I did! The truth is: while both platforms have their strengths—and weaknesses—Android isn't lagging behind despite appearances.
