New Math Game from The New York Times: Digits
The New York Times has launched a new game called Digits, following the success of Wordle. This game focuses on math skills, allowing players to engage in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Currently, you can try it's beta version for free online.
How to Play Digits
In Digits, players aim to reach a specific target number. You start with six numbers and must use them thru various operations—adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing—to get as close as possible to the target. Not all numbers need to be used in each round. This setup challenges your math abilities as you experiment with different combinations and equations.
Scoring System
The scoring system is straightforward:
- five stars for matching the target number exactly.
- Three stars if you're within 10 of the target.
- One star if you're within 25 of it.
Currently available are five puzzles that feature progressively larger numbers. I tried today’s puzzle and found it enjoyable—a great fit for those who love number games like Threes or othre popular titles from The New York Times such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
Development Insights
In an article about digits' launch and development process by The New York Times Games team, they mentioned that this free beta will help them identify bugs and determine whether they shoudl continue developing the game further. If player feedback isn’t strong enough during this testing phase, they may decide not to pursue it any longer.
