Handy web tool visualizes where you can roam with Canadian carriers

Many Canadian carriers offer roaming services for using your phone outside of Canada. There are a ton of differences in how the various roaming services work, from providers like Freedom bundling roaming with plans to the Big Three charging way too much for daily roaming access. But one of the biggest differences — and one of the trickier ones to figure out — is which countries carriers offer roaming in.

Enter Roam Radar, a neat independent web tool that can help you figure out the roaming options for various countries.

For instance, you can select a provider from a list at the top, and Roam Radar will highlight all the countries where that carrier has roaming. Further, you can select a country to see a list of the roaming options. For example, with Freedom Mobile in the U.S., Roam Radar says you can roam if you have a Canada/U.S./Mexico plan, via Freedom’s Roam Beyond, or via pay-per-use rates.

Roam Radar will also link out to carrier websites so users can verify roaming availability directly with their carrier.

If you’re not a fan of looking at a map, you can click the ‘Coverage’ page and see all the different countries listed by continent/region.

You can see when each carrier was last updated, so you’ll know if the plans are up-to-date. And the FAQs mention that “The carrier list is actively growing. Each new addition is shaped by what travelers are asking for, so that feedback genuinely influences what gets prioritized next. Send a request to [email protected].”

At the time of writing, Roam Radar didn’t have information for all Canadian carriers. A notice on its website says more carriers will be added soon. For now, it has Freedom Mobile, Fido, Koodo, Virgin Plus, and Public Mobile.

Canadian tools like this can be really helpful, especially if you find it difficult to navigate through carrier websites, as they are often confusing.
